One Lake Project
American Rivers listed the Pearl River as number 3 on 2023 America’s Most Endangered Rivers due to the potential destruction that would be caused by the "One Lake" Project.
In 2018, the Rankin-Hinds Pearl River Flood and Drainage Control District published a Feasibility Study/Environmental Impact Statement (FS/EIS) for the "One Lake" project, a new impoundment on the Pearl River 9 miles south of the current Ross Barnett Reservoir Dam. The “One Lake” project involves the dredging the Pearl River to widen, deepen and straighten an additional 10 miles of waterway with the goal of providing City of Jackson flood mitigation along with commercial development opportunities.
